Alright

Working on the Leading in Your Volunteer Organization project made me reflect on the time I’ve spent serving as an officer of the Bell Noontime club for the past year. I remembered how surprised I was when one of last year’s officers asked me to consider serving as the VP of Membership. I still felt like a newbie learning how to get around in Toastmasters. How could I possibly lead others when I didn’t even know what I was supposed to be doing?

To say I was nervous about it is an understatement, but I decided to give it a try, so I eventually managed a one-word, rather shaky-sounding response: “Alright”.

Today, I am so glad I did. Our monthly officers’ meetings are fun and informative. We spend time reviewing our club’s performance and planning activities for the months ahead.

My time as the VP of Education has been both challenging and rewarding. In addition to the normal activities, I’ve had the opportunity to take the lead on several projects.  Besides providing me with creative outlets, each of these activities has helped sharpen my leadership AND my speaking skills.

Now, what about you? Are you ready to take your membership to the next level? I promise that if you do, you’ll learn and grow. The current officers will help you get on your feet, and that won’t take as long as you might think.

Believe me when I say – you do this. You just need to say one word — ALRIGHT!
